There are a number of brain structures that can be identified as the physical homes of emotion. The limbic system, a region located approximately in the center of the brain, can be viewed as your emotional neighborhood. The limbic system consists of a series of interconnected brain structures that includes the frontal area of the brain, the hippocampus, amygdala, hypothalamus (anterior thalamic nuclei), septum, limbic cortex and fornix. It is believed that these structures support a variety of functions including emotional behavior and the long-term memory related to emotional behavior.
