Any Tips On How To Stay Organized While Writing A Book?

3

I started writing a book and I have so many ideas that I get ahead of myself and loose my train of thought before I can actually type it out. How can I be more organized and prevent me loosing my material before I type it out?
Thanks!

i get ahead of myself ALL THE TIME!!! i kept writing out bits of info that i wanted to incorporate into it and kept it with all of my writing stuff. now i have a whole document dedicated to all the stuff i can’t wait to get to. u know, the juicier stuff or stuff that is like right in your head all the time. and then i have to think about how to get to that point naturally. it really gets the creative juices flowing.

Just write whatever comes to mind. If you’re picturing a certain scene that’s way too far into the book to even think about, just write it down. This way, you don’t lose any of your thoughts or get frustrated. You can always tie in the scenes as you go. I find that spontaneous writing usually sounds the best. A great way to stay organized is to keep a rough outline of where you want the story to go. So when you get off track, and believe me you will at some point, you will always have a reference to just what you want to say.

You can try keeping just one notebook for the book you are writing and jot down your ideas.
Or what I do, is carrying around a stack of blank index cards and when an idea comes to me I write it on one index card – that way each index card represents one unique idea, so instead of trying to search through a bunch of scribbles in a notebook I can just shuffle through my deck of idea cards.
