Can Anyone Tell Me How Much Memory Does Xp Need To Be Happy?
I have just put windows xp on my laptop and at the moment I have 128 mb of memory. It is still running very slow and doesn’t seem happy at all. I will soon have 256 mb of memory. Can anyone tell me if this will be enough to speed it up to normal running.

XP should run fine on 256MB ram. In fact, I used to run it on 64MBs. It wasn’t great, but it worked. Right click on “My Computer” , hit properties, and navigate to the visual effects window. Choose adjust for best performance. Also disable any unnecessary background tasking programs you might have going.
itll speed it up but u should put 512 itll b even more happy
512MB to start.
Ideally get 512MB ..it will run real smooth.
256Mb will be better. 512Mb will be even better than that. After that in normal use there will little benefit in adding more unless you intend to do video editing whilst surfing the ‘net, writing a letter and compiling a major C++ application all at once. Since you’re on a laptop this scenario is unlikely.
I had 1.75Gb of RAM in my XP pc and it ran no better than when I had 512Mb. I don’t do graphic intensive things like modern games. Just surfing, web design, email and a test web server.
minimum of 512
Dear
According to my personal usage of Windows XP, I think if you want to run all types of the Software in windows xp, so you will need minimum 512MB RAM.
But also follow the following step to increase your PC speed.
1. Don’t download of install freeware or evaluated software
Because some software contain Adware/Spyware software
which will be run behind your computer and infected your pc and also send your important information through Internet.
2. Don’t try to install any software for just checking because after you uninstall software they will not delete all their files and contain most of own files in your pc which store your space and reduce your pc speed. download any DRIVE CLEANER Software, who is able to clean your pc and delete all unnecessary files.
3. Used Windows Defragment option one time in the month.
4. Try to reduce to playing the games because games also store lot’s of tempor~1 files in your system.

I added 512 to the 128 I had and was astounded at how everything speeded up, including stuff I didn’t think should, like e-mail collecting. If you haven’t spent the money for adding the 128 (or if you are buying 256) consider getting 512 or 1G if your computer will take it.
I now have 640M, but the 512 had to be installed in the first slot and the 128 moved over to the second.
512 MB minimum
1GB Highly Recommanded
Cheers!

256 is a minimum 512 is much better, memory is cheap now so I’d get the 512 if at all possible.
Try Disk Defragmenter.
Start >> Control Panel >> Performance and Maintenance >> Rearrange items on your hard disk to make programs run faster.
(For the category view)
If this didn’t work then try To free up some space on your hard drive.
Start >> Control Panel >> Performance and Maintenance >> Free up space on your hard drive.
(For category view)
Remove unnecessary stuff from your start up:
Click on Start and then Run and type: msconfig:
Click on the Start up tab. Unchecked everything (except anti-virus) and reboot. See whether your system boots a lot faster. You can always go back into msconfig and check things if you want them back but you’ll find that most of them are unnecessary

you should have atleast 512 to satisfy xp
512mb is minumum i would use.
1gb is better =)http://www.ebuyer.com
have a look, memory isn’t that expensive.
You should have at least 512MB of RAM. I have 1.024GB in my laptop and XP runs smoothly and quickly.
512MB to be perfectly happy and not slow down your system.
many people will advise you of the minimum amount you need, but please remmember this is a minimum, you will in future want to add various bits and pieces, do yourself a big favour now, if you are going to upgrade your memory go for maybe 1 gig, at least then you have some to play with. take care and good luck.
xp says that 256mb is enough, from experience i know that you need 512mb as a minimum to avoid it virtually stopping.
really you should put in as much as the motherboard can take or as much as you can afford.
if go min 512, but prefer 1gb
The more memory the merrier hehehe.
I think you’re asking the wrong question though, how much you need depends more on what you’re going to use your computer for.
If you’re a programmer for example and use sql 2005, you’ll need 1GB Ram as a minimum, same with most 3D design apps these days etc..
If you’re in it for gaming, you’ll be sitting with the same problem.
Even Ms Office suites have different requirements for memory.
So I cant really give you an answer on that, since i dont know what you’re using your computer for?
But yes, the more you can get the better
128 has to crawl
256 it will work slow
512 to get normal performance
1GB is great
i have 384mb and it runs fine but i just use this pc for aol and ms word
Here’s What You Need to Use Windows XP Professional
•
PC with 300 megahertz or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233 MHz minimum required (single or dual processor system);* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, or AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended
•
128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)
i would recommend at least 512 MB RAM.
