Can People Who Suppress Emotions Ever Truly Be Happy?

3

A very good friend of mine is constantly keeping his emotions inside. He lets them build and build and eventually he shuts people out of his life. I don’t think he’s a happy and he’s kidding himself when he says he is.
What are consequences of suppressing your emotions- physical, emotional, social? And can a person who suppresses emotions ever truly be happy?

I guess, it must be pretty hard for them to not to talk to anyone. You can’t force people to be open with you but one day when something really big happens, it’s going to hit him pretty hard. And he will have a breakdown and I hope that you will be there for him.

i bottle up my emotions too…um i guess i do it because that’s just the kind of person i am, haha. Yes we can be happy, and (based on the emotions building until he shuts people out part, at least coming from why i do that, maybe your friend is just depressed? No offense) maybe your friend just needs you to be more open with him, show him that your his best friend, you care about him and you don’t want anything to happen to him and that he can talk to you about anything. That usually calms me down and helps me let people in my life a little bit more. And as for the consequences, um the only thing i’ve heard that can happen to you by repressing your emotions like that is that it will make you insane, but i don’t know…

They can be happy, if its their way of dealing with things. However, there are some times when bottling up something can just make things worse, as it doesn’t allow you to see the issue from anyone else’s point of view, and it may not be as bad as you think.
I only bottle things up to save peoples’ feelings, or when its not worth talking about. Maybe its something personal, and what he fears is peoples’ reactions?
