Christians, About Your Neighbors, Shouldn’t You Set Your Goals A Little Lower Perhaps?
I always hear you speak about “love your neighbor as yourself”. Nice message really. And some of you even succeed at it.
However, do you ever listen to those neighbors? When simply reading in this R&S section, I don’t get the feeling that many neighbors actually FEEL loved by Christians. And shouldn’t love be also about that: the perception of the receiver of that love.
Could it be that if many minority goups like homosexuals, atheists, Pagans don’t have the feeling that you actually love them, that maybe your message of love could use a little updating?
Or maybe you should set your goals a little lower. Loving all your neighbors is obviously not working out. Maybe starting off with “Try at least to like your neighbor” or “Try to understand your neighbor” would be a better start?

Part of the problem comes from a modern perception that to disagree with a person is equal to hating the person. I can disagree with my children I can believe that what they are doing is wrong ,but this does not mean I hate them. It seems to come from a reinterpretation of the word tolerate. Where before one tolerated something one disagreed with now to tolerate seems to meanthat one must also accept and agree with. This is not healthy for anyone and leaves us and or children with no moral compass.
I’m Christian.
I, honestly, don’t like people in general but I’m not sure that’s what you mean.
I’m open to everyone’s opinion, but I won’t let someone tell me flat out that I’m wrong. I’ll believe what I want to; its your problem if you think I’m wrong.
The fact is…no one really knows. You may believe what you have been taught, but no one knows. So, fellow Christians who are so sure of telling off everyone else by saying that we are correct, consider that you just may not be correct. And please, stop telling everyone who isn’t Christian that they’re going to go to hell. We’re all just humans. How would anyone like to be told that they’re wrong? This goes for everyone: Treat others as you would want to be treated.
I am sorry if someone doesn’t feel loved by me. Love involves knowing someone and hearing their needs and wishes. We could all do better at that.
Christians are to love those who have made the decision to practice Homosexuality and Atheism. God loves them. However loving people doesn’t mean that we are to accept wrong things. I can love a murderer but I can not accept the act of murder that he has done. We all do wrong things. All of us, myself included.
The only difference in a Christian and someone who is not a Christian is that a Christian is a forgiven sinner and the other an unforgiven sinner. Christians do their best to stop sinning because of their love for Jesus and other people.
When I post, my main intent is to bring others to the knowledge of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, so that they can have the same relationship with Him that I do. I consider this love.
You make a good point, and you’d make an excelent preacher. In fact, faith without works is dead. Consider Martin Luther King, a Christian man that I admired. He went from city to city, preaching. Sometimes the city rioted, and burned. Had he set his sights lower, our lives would be very diferent, and I don’t think for the better. The passive aggressive nature of Christianity has had more positive effect on the world than anything else.
This is not a popularity contest.
do you like eggs?
lol, no im sorry, i was listening. look, don’t get upset with Christians, we’re not all bad. I love everyone, or everyone that I have at least crossed paths with. I mean, can’t love someone you’ve never seen or even heard about.
Christians don’t hate, if a person hates someone then they are not a Christian. If they do not love everyone, then they are not a Christian.
that is so true its like setting a new principal into action liking, understanding, caring, its all part of the simple principal of loving people but what I think your saying some people are weary of the other beliefs in people and act resilient towards them we should really open up to every one in our world the same with no fear that’s the true meaning of life to interact and love thy neighbor peace
you love people into the kingdom of God ans shouldnt paint all christians with the same wide paint brush.
I am a christian and i work with some dear gay peopl. I love them and they are my friends. We disagree agreeably on some subjects. We are polite and kind to each other.
christians dont always agree on !
be carefulll when you point fingers at people .
Christians are humans too and not infallible.
Answers should be gentle and give grace to the readers. Speaking the truth in love does not equal tolerance.
I agree, however it is not all Christians that do that. But they should always “practice what they preach” and many do not.
First of All you have to understand no one is perfect. As Christians you are supposed to follow Christ and do as HE would do. This is on fact the hardest part of being a Christian. Yes we all try to at least like or understand “our neighbors”, but I know for a fact that YOU must know someone you don’t like or even understand- but ask yourself why? Why dont you like homosexuals, or aethiest, pegans or whatever? Because of what they do not who they are because every single person on this earth is “loveable” or “likeable” and even “understandable”. The reason why alot of Christians have a hard time accepting homosexuality is because the person has no intent whatsoever of changing. Christians believe in ” Repent of your sins and you shall be Saved” A Christian will love and help a homosexual understand that what he/she is doing is not Holy in the eyes of our Lord and that he/she must repent of sin and be re-born to live as a Follower of Christ!!! God loves the sinner, but not the sin!
Markyyy – I do try to love my neighbors, all of them. But the word says what it says. God has already judged homosexuality. As for non-believers, when you are initially saved, that is what you are saved from, unbelief in God’s only Son.
As a Christian, I must believe that the word of God is true. All of it. I therefore must act on that faith, and inform people that I feel are in error, according to what is in the word of God, that they are not following in the ways of God. I am not being judgemental by telling them that the word of God says this or that about a given transgression.
To ask me not to act on what I believe is to ask me to disobey God. I am supposed to correct my brothers and sisters out of love, and compassion, because I do not wish to see anyone burn in hell for their disobedience or unbelief. If this offends someone, I am truly sorry. But I must act on my belief in God, and spread the gospel, even if there are those that do not believe in it.
It’s easy to love your neighbor as yourself when you’re a self-hating homophobe.
I agree.
I am a believer. I will not call myself a christian because, apparently, everyone is but continually smokes, drinks, swears, has sex before marriage and live homosexual lives. I don’t hate these people and I don’t judge tell. My job as a believer is to plant the seed of truth by telling them about God. God takes it from there. I admit that the world is a pretty rotten place out there but I’m here to share the truth of a life full of happiness after death, not to say “you’re gay so you’re going to Hell.” As believers, we need to say “it’s a horrible truth that homosexuality is a sin and sin leads to Hell but there is a way out.” People need to realize what being a child of God really means. I’m sorry for all those people out there who don’t but we all still have a chance. That’s why Jesus died for us; so we can have a chance. God bless us all!
Look, anyone can claim to be a christian. I think that Christianity is a verb, and that a Christians should act just as Jesus would want them to. I totally see your point. Even though I am a christian and do not discriminate against ANYONE, I see people all the time claiming to be Christians and acting like complete jerks. I am sorry this has been your experience, however, please know that “most” Christians do not act this way.
Good point, Markyyy. Nice.
I think if more people did love each other no matter who they are the world would be a better place. no one likes to be treated like a minority’s if you treat them as a human being you wouldn’t have atheists
But that means god has not set appropriate standard of goals for them and it directly proves that he’s imperfect.
Oh wait, isn’t he already?
Most people don’t love themselves, so why should they love their neighbours like themselves? If Jesus actually said the words attributed to him, he missed this point.
God loves sinners and wants them to repent. He still cannot justify your wrong. I love my neighbor weather or not he is a murderer or a sex abuser, and so does God, Doesn’t mean you are going to heaven if you don’t repent. It isn’t that complicated. You have a choice. Pick one. Follow his ten commandments-Go to heaven. Don’t and don’t repent- Go to Hell.
We are called to love our neighbors, and our enemies, that’s true. But, we don’t have to condone what they do, especially when they try to practice sin in the church. We are not to judge outside the body of Christ, but we are to judge inside the body, since we represent Christ. Loving our neighbors doesn’t mean we have to like what they do, and IT DOESN’T MEAN WE HAVE TO CHANGE OUR FAITH TO FIT THEM. God will judge those outside the church, and He is the only one just enough to do that. You don’t understand that when we tell someone about Jesus and God’s commandments, and about what sin is, we are telling them BECAUSE WE LOVE THEM, and we don’t want them to perish, but to have eternal life. By this, we ARE showing God’s love.
Do you love Christians? I know you like to preach to us a lot.
There is many kind of love. I have gay friends and I love them. I think that their lifestyle is disgusting at times, and they think my life style is disgusting at times. We accept each other as friends. They do not force their homosexual experiences to me, I do not preach them about their choices. I understand them, and they understand me. I will never vote for the gay marriage, but they do not care about me less for that.
I know that my neighbors know that I care about them. I admit that I have a lot to learn about love.
If Christians followed the message of Jesus, they wouldn’t be Christians at all.
Great question. I agree with you 100%.
Many Christians do not practice what they preach. You should love everyone or at the very least be able to tollerate them. It is all a question of respecting views that are not the same as yours.
Ooo, very nice. They don’t listen to their own bible too well do they?
