Complicated question about self-improvement.?
This is a hard thing to ask because if I give as much detail as I can, this question would go on for pages. I’m basically getting at how I can get rid of my insecurities as a teacher. I went to school for teaching and graduated recently. I am having trouble finding a job as a teacher (I know this is mostly due to the economy and my lack of experience), but people are still being hired as teachers. I’ve sent out dozens of resumes and cover letters (that have been proofread numerous times by myself and others) and have yet to get any interviews.
This is starting to make me feel like I am not prepared enough to be a teacher and am losing confidence in myself and my abilities (not just as a teacher, but in myself in general). I’ve never had a problem getting a job, but they’re not in education and not anywhere close to what I want to do.
How can I regain my self-confidence, even if I am unable to find a teaching job soon?
I am looking for elementary teaching jobs. I did just move to a new state 6 months ago, with my fiance (he started grad. school here) and because the job market was so abundant. However, once I got here everyone stopped hiring.

Find out what you need to do to become a substitute teacher. Get your foot in the door, get on the list(s). In my region the public schools will ONLY hire a full-time teacher once they have gotten to know them, and they hire off the sub list (unwritten practice). Why don’t you advertise and do some tutoring right now. See if you can distribute this via the local schools. Join the AAUW. Become a summer reading tutor for an adult/child…even for free. You do not say where you live, you may have to relocate as jobs will not open for several more years. Good luck! (psychology professor)
I would talk to some friends, talk to other teachers, talk to other unemployed people, unemployed college graduates.
You need to realize that you aren’t being turned away because of your ability in teaching, or from your one on one interviews, etc. It is your ‘dozens of resumes and cover letters’. As you said, the economy is bad, and so on. If the resume is sound, then there is nothing you can do aside from touring some schools, making friends with some on the school board, etc. On the other hand, you might rework the resume, make sure it isn’t your traditional resume – the resumes of the past don’t fly these days. They are uninteresting, and all the catch phrases make them instant turn offs. Explaining yourself in a common language (but still intelligent) is more appealing. Even video resumes or attachments are ideas.
Try to sell yourself a little more creatively.
Again, though, your ability has nothing to do with this. If no one is buying, no one is buying. Maybe you have to sell it a different way, or simply wait a little longer.
You’ll get hired, no doubt about that. Just don’t sell yourself short. In the mean time work somewhere that can bring you some experience to prepare you better for the classroom. Volunteer at schools to gain experience (that can be added to the resume) and will put you in contact with the people you need to know to get hired.
Just brain storm a bit.
You’ll be fine.. in a year from now you’ll look back on this time and smile.
u can get confidence only by doing such work in which u r perfect. so u hav 2 select a field in which no one can defeat u. “every one borns with a special intelligence, so know about urself.”
my mom went through this too. she found out a lot of times its about the people you know at a school. if already know someone who works in the school then you are way ahead in the game. but it is pretty hard to know people at a school when you are just starting out, a catch 22. i would suggest talking to relatives or to friends with kids to ask their childs teachers about possible openings. you’ve graduated, you ARE prepared, you’re just overwhelmed because it is new.
congradulations on your recent graduation! and good luck on the job hunt and all the best in the future.
I was impressed by your question – well composed, grammatical, with correct spelling and punctuation. That already puts you way ahead of a lot of college graduates these days.
If you’re not getting interviews, it’s not YOU. It’s your search methods.
You say you’ve sent out dozens of resumes. It should be more like hundreds! You may need the services of a resume/cover letter professional, to make yours stand out more. You need a “grabber”. You might need to expand the search to inner city and/or rural schools. Your full-time job right now is advertising yourself.
It’s already July. Most schools have already got their staff together for the 2009-20010 school year, so it’s even harder than the economy would imply. If you don’t find a job right away, don’t lose hope. January is also a “turnover time”, and if you cover the world in paper now, you should already be in line for some of those jobs.
Everyone goes through a point in their life when they feel useless or defeated so this is normal. However, this has nothing todo with your lack of experience. You should not worry about this, its completely normal. As you said, the economy is in crisis and many schools are even being shut down.People are being fired left right and centre. So this has nothing to do with your abilities as a teacher.
I think destiny and luck has a big factor in finding jobs. My friend was telling me how lucky her family was. When she moved to canada, her father got a job through a reference that had been in the same field that he was working on in a different country ! How lucky is that ? So dont worry. Just as my friends dad, your opportunity will come. However, when you do get this opportunity you cannot be picky about anything. If you get a decent job, I say you should go for it.
Keep your mind open for options. Many schools are looking for more things, than the usual english or science teacher. For example you could teach subjects such as dance, cosmotology, hospitality. There are plenty of options so if the school your applying to doesnt have the subject you want , broaden your options and introduce a new class if you have the ability to teach it .
The fact that you were one of those who passed graduation should be a confidence booster itself. Many students cant even pass high school, yet alone do a course. Go out with your friends, go shopping , get a new haircut, go dancing. Do activities that would rise up your confidence. If you start feeling confident in the way you look/talk/feel. You would automatically feel confident teaching.
My perspective in life is very different than other students. Even as a young child, I had a completely different outlook on life. I remember feeling like a failure when I thought I wouldnt be able to make the badminton team. I tried out, but my luck wasnt good enough. The teachers never saw me do a good shot, but instead saw me fail. Badminton was my passion and the only sport i was good at. [ Yes, its sad. I know ] Then i noticed that I should be greatfull my school even has a badminton team. I then made up this theory , [ i was like 10 , so its sorta dumb ]
When you go to buy fruits at a grocery store. You usually pick out the ripest/biggest/juiciest fruits. You would never pick the one that seemed normal or needs a few days to be at its ripest form [ I like to think of that as a metaphor for lack of time/experience ] Its human nature to pick out the best. Keeping that in mind, the next tryout i went to [ There was a total of 3 ] I made the team. The teacher told me I was one of the best players in the team. She had decided to put me on the team before even the last tryout. I think it was because I gave off a positive energy, and was pumped up for the next tryout . Turned out, my theory had given me confidence and I understood the world a little better .
My theory basically says that people normally go for the best without even looking at the others. Its not that your a bad teacher, its just that there are others who have more experience and have had time. At this state of economy, people need all the help they can get .
So, You just need some time and confidence.
You sound like a wonderfull person and I dont think you need any self- improvement. You just need the experience and the time. Dont be so hard on yourself. = ]
Remember, there will always be a day when you will be ripe and picked out of all the other fruits = ]
Good luck with your Job hunt ! ^.^
PS ; I know that was a lame metaphor; but i like to use it.
+ sorry for making it super long. I get too much into answering. ahaah.
First of all, congratulations on graduating. Second, you need to realize that when you don’t get any call backs or offers, they are not rejecting you as a person, how could they, all they see is a piece of paper. Your resume is just not getting seen by enough people. With the economy it will be much more difficult. Life is a matter of percentages, in order to succeed you will have to fail first. I know it is cliche, but it is also true. Just keep trying until a door opens. My brother is a school teacher, it is a good profession. I am actually in the military, another option for you, is going into the military as an officer. If you have a four year degree, you can become a commissioned officer; no boot camp required. If you have student loans they have programs to help you pay them off. I suggest at least looking into it. Just call up or go to your local recruiting office and chat with them, there won’t be any pressure, I promise. You can choose any branch, but I suggest Navy. I hope this helps, but either way, life isn’t always easy, just keep trying. I hope you aren’t going to be an english teacher, this was probably one big one on……….LoL
Well, I’m not a guru myself but let’s share and analyst some points together and at the end of the day, hopefully we can discover the answers to your questions?
1.You are a qualified teacher with determinations.
2.Due to poor economy, lack of experience, eroding confidence.
3.You make efforts to continue applying for the job.
4.Teachers profession is still hiring.
Answers:
1.You have the qualities, qualifications, passion and determinations to be a teacher and teacher you will be? Be focus for it is only a matter of time, be patient.
2.Regardless of the state of economy, educations are always expanding and chances are plenty for rookies. Confidence is a teacher’s criteria, so hang on to it.
3.As long as you put in efforts without giving up, your luck will change soon to better and I assured you, your turn is next.
4.As long as teachers are still been hired meaning, you still has a chance if you persist. If you were to give up, then you will have no chance to be hired at all.
Please be patient, prepare yourself well for the teacher’s job is coming your way and is just round the corner. Have confidence, Cheer up and Good Luck.
G- Some years ago, I was in a situation where I lacked a diploma for the kind of sales i did successfully in Europe, and overqualified for the non-diploma jobs in the US. My wife and I were close to becoming homeless because we had no family here, and her European family hated me, and resented her for marrying me.
Luckily, there was an article in the paper about the SGI’s convention in San Diego. I decided to try it out and got a job right away and money came quickly from 2 unexpected sources. This sounds miraculous, but is not. Cognitive realism has to account for non-local effects of intention. They are not transparent, yet are real. Example, identical twins being emotionally connected across thousands of miles. I will list the essence of SGI’s practice, and a link for you.
Make Efforts More Effective
Warning! This document will not entertain you with platitudes or comfort you with ceremonies. There are no prayer wheels to spin. It is a set of specifications for achieving goals without paying with coin, or time, for empty advice, and is as short as seems practical. Generalist –June 7, 2009
A clear, well informed, mind makes your efforts more effective.
To function much better than most and optimize life, start by observing what you can see and systematizing it. Once you discard everything you have been told to believe and accept only what is pragmatically observable, you will wind up with these results. The capitalized words are the Japanese pronunciation.
-Choose to focus your intention, respect the rational truth of your life. – NAM. Nam is derived from the Sanskrit term Namah, where the h is silent, and means respect.
-Understand the basic relevant realities like the inseparability of tangible and intangible-MYOHO.
MYOHO is also the FUNDAMENTAL UNION OF THE PHYSICAL AND UNIVERSAL that everyone is seeking in religion and inventing different names for.
-Realize that causes produce effects-RENGE.
-Understand that change never stops- KYO. This is motion and continuity-like a river. No one is stuck.
Reciting the formula that includes all of these basic realities in a short form produces results. Why? It works because the human mind is heavily biased toward language. It’s in Japanese because the topic can’t be expressed as succinctly in another language, and its originator lived in 13th century Japan.
This process clears the mind for greater comprehension. It is not magic, it is cognitive exercise. It doesn’t replace focused effort toward your goals. It makes those efforts more effective.
Put your palms together and recite the formula for a great life (Nam Myoho Renge Kyo.) It works better when you find a support group at SGI. This summation of life’s realities is the basic truth which anyone can use to enhance life. The dichotomies and contradictions disappear as fast as you allow them to.
What have I gained since I started to use this formula?
Unknown artistic ability discovered. That ability led to successful rebuilding of an unhappy, isolated, paranoid, chain saw personality to being a middle class nice guy with all the friends I want. .Money is much better. Professional ability is much better. Met and married the woman of my dreams 14 happy years ago.
Comprehensions added.
The comprehension required to help hundreds of people change their lives to happy success. Success as they individually defined it

2 )http://www.sgi.org Caveat. Although the chief translator for sgi-usa, recognizes that the essential nature of SGI’s practice is a, “self-directed cognitive exercise”, some critical words are, at times, translated from Japanese in ways more appropriate to lives controlled by external powers. Examples: chanting and sutra recitation are often translated as “praying.” Choosing how to live one’s life is translated as recognizing “mission.” Building confidence is translated as “deepening faith.” The practice of Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism is translated as “faith”. Respecting the rational and complete truth expressed by Nam Myoho Renge Kyo, is termed “devotion.” The terms praying, or pray, mission devotion, faith are appropriate to a god based religion, not to a self directed cognitive exercise. This is a historical and linguistic discrepancy that will probably rectify itself with time and greater awareness.
