Do you think reading on a regular basis improve your intelligence?
I always felt like when ever i keep my reading of books, articles and other reading material of fiction and non fiction that i am able to comprehend things easier than when i don’t read on a regular basis.
Any one else ever notice this kind of self improvement from reading often?
Ramon b, just because something is beyond your intelligence does’nt mean you got to insult a question that can only get intelligent answers other than yours of course.

YES!!!! it definately does!
Yes, its been well documented.
It definitely does. Exercising your brain in any way will strengthen it.
yes. all really SMART people read…alot.
i have actually noticed this, however, i think it has to do with the fact that you are exercising your brain at home rather than just at school. It certainly expands your vocabulary.
I think it might, there are people I know who never stop reading and are really smart so I guess it could.
yes
Yes, I find reading improves my vocabulary and makes me more knowledgeable about things.
um, yes
it is very important to read cosmopolitan magazine every month
Yes, absolutely!
yes, when I’m at school I’m more.. “there” and at home when I’m off school my brain goes into “slush” mode.
i think it depends what u are reading
Yes, absolutely. In fact, sometimes I think that some people have a secondary education when in fact, they are “readers”.
Yes I notice that also and If I don’t write or chat for awhile my spelling gets worse.
Like crazy! Whenever I read during highschool. everynight I would read, and i would do better at everything! I would pay attention and listen more. My grades would improve. When i didnt read,it would all go down hill.
This is a dumb question. Yes.
Yes, it does definitely!….of course it depends on the kind of reading you’re doing…if you don’t try to understand what you’re reading then it’s definitely just a waste of time… reading definitely keeps one’s mind alert; not to mention reading keeps you informed, and when one is informed, it projects intelligence!…so keep reading everyone!
Yes, definately!
i don’t know about intelligence but it surely boosts your confidence.obviously you would learn more by reading more n different kind of books.books teach you so many things,so that’s why may be you can comprehend things easily.
It wouldn’t hurt you to get a tutor who can help your comprehension skills. Good luck and God bless.
I think so…I know it does increase my vocabulary. The reason for this is that you are constantly exposed to new words when reading , and they are used in a proper context. This is more meaningful and lasting- than, say, just reading the dictionary or looking up New Word a Day type stuff. You learn about things you would not be exposed to in your regular daily life. As far as actual intelligence, maybe, maybe not.
LOL
JMHO….
C
Yes for a fact.
This is because your vocabulary and self/world awareness increases with each fact and word you gather.
Nothing can increase the IQ level, but the intellect can certainly be improved.
It depends on what you read and how you take it in. I read frequently and I find when I agree with whoever I’m reading, my understanding doesn’t improve at all. There generally aren’t any elements to things I believe in that I haven’t already thought out entirely and worded in every possible way. However, reading people I disagree with offers me the opportunity to increase my understanding by finding a way to articulate why they’re wrong.
Though if you mean literature specifically, most literature does give one the opportunity to get a broader understanding of different ways of thinking and different aspects of perhaps even their own culture. But then again, a good portion of literature is also dull, pretentious crap. Especially the stuff they consider to be good.
One must have the discernment to know what is helpful to read, and then, yes, it is sometimes helpful.
To One in a Million: The IQ level is quite variable actually and does increase with exposure to certain things. It’s not just a test of base intellectual capacity, and even base intellectual capacity can increase and diminish with the practice of that function. Read more about IQ.
That is kinda true.
BUT not really, HOWEVER, you improve your reading and listening skills.
YOU become more quick…but not more intelligent.
YOU GET SMARTER, not more inteligent….DO YOU GET WHAT I’M SAYING????
But , its a good habit, keep on doing it. I wish I had that habit.
GOOD LUCK
absolutely, without a doubt. “Without the love of books, the richest man is poor; with this love, the poorest man is rich.” The best books is not one that merely informs, but one that gets the reader to inform himself and collecting books is like collecting happiness.
Reading of books, magazines, newspapers can definitely improve your thinking , give you alternative ways of seeing things, give you a a better prospective of life on the whole. It is like asking the question, why re-invent the wheel when you can learn so much more from the minds of so many writers who have put their feelings and expertise in words. You also improve on your command of the language, increase your store of vocabulary and learn to express and to articulate your feelings and emotions. In fact if I may say so, reading makes a person more civilised, more cultured , more humane. Make this activity part and parcel of your life throughout.
Of course!!! It’s all brain food!!!
Literatures of all kinds gives you a grand opportunity to grasp of many styles, outlooks, and truths…plus it keeps your imagination & creativity in action mode…one of the greatest resources we have as humans being!!!
Read On, Sweetness!!! And Good Journey!!!
actually no it does not.
you are born with all the intelligence you will ever have.
kind of like height…you cant get taller then what your genes are programmed to stretch you. (of course, there are certain rare surgeries that can make some people taller but this is not at the genetic level)
However, what you can do with reading and exercising your brain is make it more efficient. you can make it more powerful by obtaining knowledge that helps you make better decisions. this is not being more intelligent, its being less ignorant.
average intelligence is 100 by the IQ test, if you gain knowledge your intelligence is still the same, but you can solve problems more efficiently because now you know how to solve those problems.
hope this helps.
i know i’m in the minority (maybe alone here) in this, but that is because its counterintuative what i have said. it just sounds wrong, but its actually a fact.
Yes. Reading will increase your vocabulary & knowledge too ~ both these must lead to easier comrehension ~ The brain is like a muscle ~ if it’s exercised it’s strength increases, in this case, not physical, but mental strength……Doing Crossword puzzles & brain teasers on a regular basis can help with this too, & memory functionality also.
Happy reading!
it gives you knowledge so i guess it would
