Has your life ever been greatly impacted from a self-help book?

7

There are probably thousands and thousands of self-help books out there ranging from weight-loss to stress management to how to work better, love better, live better, and everything inbetween. Often, people will read through these books, and then go on about their lives as usual, with nothing having changed. I am curious to know if anyone has ever experienced a change in their life that resulted from reading/applying information from a self-help book. What book was it? Tell me about your experience.

Well i don’t read the self help books. I read books o religion , spirituality, india etc. My point of view is that it all depends on the person , how is he likely to change . Please do write to me if you have had any change in your life after reading a self-help book.

Four books have greatly changed my life:

“How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World” by Harry Browne.
This book taught me perspective on relationships, jobs, government, morality, etc.

“The Virtue of Selfishness” by Ayn Rand
This book is the book that I give credit for my breaking my addiction to drugs.
This is because it taught me to live a rational life.

“Why Am I So Afraid to Tell You Who I Am”
This book taught me a lot about human psychology, and self-deception.

“The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind” by Julian Jaynes.
Though not a slef-help book, it taught me a lot about the origins of irrational thinking in the human mind.

The Art of Happiness…by Dalai Lama and Howard C. Cutler. It is a book that looks a Buddhism in a western medicine psychologist’s point of view where the psychologist attends events where the Dalai Lama is speaking and speaks with him alone. It changed my life.

I have only read one self help book in my whole life. It was called Letting Go. I was 16 and it was the first time a boy had broke my heart. I was a mess. The book was very, very help full. It wasn’t like your typical love yourself no matter what kind of book. It took me step by step. It even had a chapter teaching me to carry around something that smelled bad and every time I thought of that person I took a whiff. Great book, but I’m 33 now and still single. Come to think of it I really haven’t had much of a problem letting go. Hmmmm maybe the book was too good.
