Comments on How Can I Keep My Bedroom Organized?
For some people organizational skills are their strength and a no brainer. For others, it is a constant source of frustration. But here are some things that will help you on your way:
1. Keeping a tidy room starts with making the bed the moment you get up. Not later on, not that evening, but as soon as you get up. We use a duvet, which makes bed making a breeze.
2. Get in the habit of putting things away immediately when you’re finished with them rather than just tossing them off to the side. Everything has a home. It belongs somewhere. Socks and underwear belong in the drawer, not on the floor. Dirty clothes belong in the clothes hamper. Other clothing goes in the closet and needs to be hung up.
3. Figure out if you are a pack rat. Once a week set aside time to purge your room. The more junk you have lying around the more difficult it is to keep tidy. Everyone needs to do this. You will be amazed at how quickly you can accumulate “junk”. A room’s size does not change. There is only so much space. Your goal is to use what space you have as efficiently as you can. Get rid of old magazines and stuff that is out of date. Get rid of duplicate things.
4. If you only have so much closet space go through your clothes and get rid of stuff you’ve not worn for months and likely will not wear in the future. They are only taking up space. Someone else would appreciate these items.
5. Examine your time management skills. Tasks can be approached in one of 2 ways. Either set aside a specific amount of time that you will devote to the task or work on the task until it is completed. I prefer the first approach. Set aside a specific amount of time, say 20 minutes daily to tidy up the room.
I set the microwave timer to remind me when I’m done. Do not allow any distractions ( telephone, computer, friends,etc.). If you have not completely cleaned everything up don’t worry about it. You can tackle the rest of the problem tomorrow. Just don’t add to the problem between now and then by throwing more stuff around.
You will be amazed that in no time you are no longer having to set aside 20 minutes. It will soon become 10 minutes and eventually just a couple of times a week. It all depends on how willing you are to start putting your stuff away when you are finished using it.
You have gotten into some bad habits but you will be able to get rid of those habits. Give yourself 21 days and you will be a different person. Good luck.
Becoming organized with something like that may take a little self discipline on your part. Set aside a particular time of each day to do your bedroom. Maybe after your favorite TV show. You may look into buying you some plastic shelves, drawers, or even containers you can slide under your bed to put things in. When you get done with whatever you have taken out of whichever place, immediately put it back where you got it from. Just “Take the bull by the horns” and take control of the situation.
Good luck!
