start by making piles.
one for clothes (or two for clothes, clean and dirty)
one for books and music
one for trash
one for stuff to give away–be ruthless, do you really need to keep the fuzzy green elephant you got in third grade?
etc.
Once you’ve sorted all your stuff into the piles, throw away the trash, haul the give aways out to the car, and put everything else where it belongs.
If you make the piles of trash and stuff to give away bigger than the other piles, your room will much easier to keep clean
Good Luck!!!

Number 1…Get rid of unnecessary things… donate old toys and clothes that you no longer use…and maybe get your parents to buy you some totes or something that you can use to organize the stuff you do want to keep (closet organizer or maybe a couple of ‘under the bed’ plastic storage bins).
Also, try to set up a routine as to where things go. For example, your school backpack…always put it in one place…your school work papers and books…try to designate one place for everything, that way you always know where everything is and that way everything is always neat.
Good Luck!

You may have too much stuff. Bring in three boxes. One for trash, one for give away, and one for garage sale. This will thin it out.
Then set a timer each day (or put on a peppy album) and give yourself 15 minutes. Remember Noah’s Ark? Get the elephants off the boat first. In other words, put away the big stuff first and it will feel like you’re accomplishing something right away. This motivates you to continue.
If papers are a problem have 3 stacks. A “to read” file, a “to do this week” file, and a “Check at the end of the month” file.
Reward yourself each day that your room looked better than average. Give yourself a gold star. When you have enough gold stars, treat yourself to a new CD.

Tips to organize a Kid’s Room:
1) Have bins and boxes on lower shelves so that a child can put away the toys.
2) Have the child label the bins and boxes.
3) Provide plenty of low hooks to hang up sweaters, pajamas, jackets, book bags, etc.
4) Take children with you when you go to donate unused items. This helps them learn to part with things. Get rid of that clutter!
5) Encourage your child/teenager to choose their outfits for the next day before they go to bed at night.
6) Ask them to straighten up for 5-minutes each night. This is an organizer’s discipline.
7) Remember everything needs a place or you will never be able to keep it straight!!!
Good Luck organizing your room!
