How Can I Stay Organized During The School Year?

5

Every year before school begins, I vow to keep organized. I try to note events, tests and homework dates on my calendar, but I often forget. (I keep a planner already). How can I keep myself motivated and willing to do homework, and how can I stay organized and keep everything in track? This year counts for a lot of important marks and I really want to make sure I do well. Any thoughts/tips? Thanks!

Make to do lists everyday and check off items as you do them. Have a large calendar at home with due dates in red, write down when you will start a project on the calendar too–that will avoid last minute late nights, have a write/erase board in your room with what needs to get done today and this week, if you have a big project or appointment say due in October, write a reminder to yourself on September’s page. If you have a desk in your room, keep things filed vertically, not horizontally. When papers are lying flat, things get lost. Keep yourself motivated by rewarding yourself when you do your homework and get a paper written early. Watch a little TV, get an ice cream, hang with friends. Make your school work your priority and stick to it.

Try one of these websites:
http://www.tadalist.com (You can email yourself a copy of your lists in case you forget to check the site)
stu.dicio.us ( you’ll make a list of classes and can put in assignments by class)
These sites have really helped me stay organized (I’m a college student).

I suffer from the same problem and I am about to enter my junior year in college. What I do is keep a seperate folder for each subject and make sure I label it. I always put the papers in them so I don’t forget them. And I always keep the folders with me at school. No matter what, that way I will remember the important papers I need for each class. Also, I write my homework assignments in more than one place. Not just a planner but other places as well. That way it gives me more of a chance on seeing the assignment and remembering them. Also, try rewarding yourself. Or discuss with your parents on a reward system you could do, that way it will keep you motivated. My mom has promised to buy me a laptop for Christmas if I do all my work and pass all my classes. Also another motivation for me would be the hopes of transferring to a very big university I always wanted to attend. I hope this helps.

I had the same problem. I would try to set up a reward system. Do …, get…! This really works and will make working towards something rewarding.

Buy a plastic file holder and use it to hold all of your homework, as you finish it, put the completed stuff back in your regular binder and watch your homework load dissapear as you work.
Invite all your friends to starbucks, jamba juice, or just to your house once a week to drink smoothies or hot chocolate or other drinks and work on homework together. It will help keep things fun, and give you something to look forward to each week.
Besides that, I’ve always found that putting sticky notes somewhere where you can’t miss them (like on your bathroom mirror) with little reminders on them helps you remember things to do before you go to sleep, and before you leave for school.
