The Crusaders needed the Venetian navy to get to the Holy Land, and to supply them while they were there. For 85,000 marks, Venice agreed to transport 25,000 crusaders to Egypt, and maintain them there for 3 years.
However, on gathering at Venice, the crusaders were unable to pay. They therefore agreed to help Venice (who was supporting a pretender to the Byzantine throne) capture Constantinople in lieu of payment.Additionally, several of the Crusader leaders had long held ambitions of their own about conquering Constantinople.
Some crusaders refused, and sailed to Palestine, but most aided the Venetians in the assault and capture of the city.
