How do I apply self Help to myself?

4

I’ve been reading books on self help and on how to control anxiety. I have some social anxiety and I’ve been trying to apply everything I am learning about how to go about changing my self image etc…

But how do I convert the words on the page to improvement. The problem is that by reading something that it just doesnt become gospel and become stone in your head. I still have those negative thoughts and no matter how hard I try to get rid of them they always resurface no matter how many books I may read.

So My question is, how do I take what I read in a self help book and make some permanent change in my behavior.

Is affirmations the only way?

They will not always be there, I dont care what anyone says. Its a matter of re-recording those thoughts with positive thoughts. The more frequently you affirm yourself, the less powerful the negative thoughts are. The only reason they got in your head is because they were repeated over and over so now you reverse that by repeating over and over the positive.

As far as what you believe about yourself – that is a choice and you can believe whatever you want so pick the good, healthy stuff.

If you spend too much time reading self-help books, you will only end up intellectualizing your behavior.
The best way I know to deal with social anxiety is to face it head-on, and you will become less sensitive to it after each addition exposure to what makes you anxious.
Also, when you do become anxious, write it down and make a log so you can see what does make you anxious- different people or situations with people? Having to speak publicly? etc.
Good luck overcoming your anxiety!

It’s true what you wrote – you can read many self-help books and get nowhere. Why? Because you just keep reading and not doing. There is no substitute for action.

Sometimes, we have to take action even if we are afraid of the action. Try to do something small – in other words, take a small step in the right direction. Once you do that and you are successful (yes, sometimes you will succeed), you can move on.

This is what I have done and I have social anxiety or social phobia or how about calling it by the old fashioned name – shy.

Good luck!

Affirmations, or as I prefer to call them, Verbal Remedies work by enacting your creative visualization. The way to write and recite your own precision affirmations is to make your statements: Positive, Present, Personal and Specific. Here are some useful resources for getting your mind around your own verbal remedies: http://www.psychic-junkie.com/verbal-remedies.html
