A goal is a dream with a deadline. It’s also a living thing that changes with time. Prioritizing is good. Here are a few other things I do that help me.
I break my life into the circles of influence. Family. Friends. Business. Home. Travel. Personal Improvement Etc.
I write a bunch of things down on scrap paper with NO limitations. Crazy, Fun, Creative, Ambitious.
I narrow them down into 5 yr, 1 yr and 45 days. They have to be congruent. My short terms need to lead me into my 1 years and those into my 5′s. I also keep a dream list that I consider down the road.
Then I set about knocking off my 45 day’rs. I used to try and achieve them in 30 days but life happens and i didn’t accomplish what I needed. Then I became discouraged and a downward spiral ensued. At 45 days I’m now much better off. Granted I don’t always hit them all. That’s when around day 42 I reevaluate. I set the new goals and adjust as necessary.
I use a couple of tools. I get a small paper booklet where I write them ALL down. When I’m waiting for someone at the store, I pull them out and reread them. When there’s a break in my day I pull them out and reread them. Every few days in the morning I reread. Every Sunday night before bed I reread. By drilling them into my head, I constantly thought of things I could do to further my objective. By just doing 2 little things every day builds a great path toward my finish.
After eight years I have a stack of achieved goals booklets and it’s fun to go back and look at them. I’ve also married a wonderful woman, built a great house, started two businesses, built a summer home on the lake and so on.
Some of my 5 year goals were put aside and some of my dream list got put into action and accomplished.
Don’t start with the moon. Start small and see how it can work for you. Every 45 days you get a fresh new look.
By simply writing them down you are already ahead of 95% of the people.
