How Do You Decide If You Are Complacent Or Just Happy With Your Career?

2

In your career (or life in general), how do you decide whether you are happy where you are or whether you are just complancent. Is there a point where you are just satisfied or possibly scared of taking on new challenges or risks?
I was curious what other people think. Thanks!

I’d say, career or life, the difference is in how motivated you feel to keep striving and improving and enjoying what you do. If you usually look forward to what is ahead of you and keep thinking up ways to make it better, you are happy. If you are complacent, you go through the motions, but don’t feel motivated to put in any extra effort. You might even be unhappy, but telling yourself that “things could be worse,” which can give you enough satisfaction to make it through, but not to really thrive.

Happy would be if you look forward to going to work everyday. It doesn’t seem like a chore or boring. There is nothing wrong with wanting to just stay right where you are and it doesn’t necessarily mean you are scared.
In my case, I’ve worked with children for nearly 30 years. For a few years I was in administration for a preschool/childcare/school situation and I found I missed the everyday wonder of working with the children. I ended up taking a “demotion” of sorts so I could be with the children. I find it much more rewarding than doing paperwork or supervising adults. I feel I actually make a real difference in the world by helping “my” children realize a love of learning.
