How Does The Idea Of “just Being Your Self,” Fit In With The Idea Of “self-improvement’?

3

Well not many people would have a strong idea of what their self is. If pushed for an answer, chances are they will admit that they don’t know themselves very well. And that’s reasonable, people only have one perspective from which to view themselves and that perspective is often being focused on external situations.
So, if you don’t know yourself, then you’re going to have a hard time “just being your self”. Therefore self improvement could be seen as getting to know your self so that you can just be what you are.

Yeah, they kind of counteract. Instead of thinking of ‘just being your self’ think of ‘be happy’…whatever that may entail. It’s a form of self-improvement that’s good for you and society in its own way.
Also you can still have your own unique personality and values while still making sacrifices to society, like working hard, being kind, etc.

It could be counterproductive to try to improve from a fake personality. If you were to admit your faults and then go from there, you may better address your core issues that’s holding you back.

One way to improve oneself is for one to accept himself and “just be himself”.
But, no one can truly be himself to the fullest extent for sociological reasons.
