Chinese characters are constructed from what are called “radicals,” which are tiny bits of characters that can be re-arranged, removed or added to make new characters. Each radical has a particular meaning, and when combined together with other radicals, can create many abstract meanings. Radicals have their own order (just as our alphabet has a set order), therefore the main radical of a character (usually the one that determines the meaning of the character) is used as the first “letter” of that character, and they organize that way.
