How To Have A Happy Black Moor Goldfish?
I would like to get two Black Moor Goldfish. Iv owned fish all my life, but Iv never had this breed before, and I want to make sure theyre happy.
The only problem is I have limited space. So what would be the smallest best size tank for them?
What kind of filtration should I use?
What kind of decorations are safe for them? (With their delicate eyes)
What kind of food is best for them?
And any other tips you can think of, please. Thank you very much for your time.

black moors are goldfish producing a high amount of waste which makes there tank an ammonia battle field, the minimum size tank you could have would be a 40 gallon tank a 50 gallon tank would be better,
if you have a 40 ,50 gallon tank an external filter would be best something like the Rena filster or fluval it sits under your unit and the pipes feed through your tank instead of the pump being in your tank.
you can have live plants if you want bridges caves some fake ornaments watch for the ones with plastic flowers on i find my fish have died getting stuck on them.
you can purchase food from your local fish shop they will be able to advice you as i don’t know brands that your shop would sell, they also like orange slices as well ,just remove when eaten.
gold fish are very dirty fish and you need to keep there tank clean by doing a 25 percent water change weekly buy a testing kit for nitrite nitrate and ammonia and test weekly.
you must make sure you cycle your tank for 4 to 6 weeks before even thinking of adding the gold fish
You’ll need at least a 35-40 gallon tank, but a 50 or 55 would be best. They are related to carp, so they produce tons of waste. Any kind of filter, just make sure that it is at least twice the tank size. Like if you have a 40 gallon, you’ll need a filter that can filter at least 80 gallons.
I would stick to plants for the decorations, or small decor that doesnt have any sharp points.
You’ll also need a good vaccum to clean out the tank. I recomend pythons, they are great. You can get them cheaper online, I’ll put a link. Also a master fresh water test kit. Also when I kept goldfish I always added aquarium salt. It helps prevent diseases and I was told that it helps the fins not get “clamped” up.
Be ready for lots of maintance! Very regular water changes.
10gallons of well filtered water is a minimum for each fancy goldfish. of course bigger is always better so the biggest tank you can fit.
feel things before you buy them. make sure there are no sharp or rough edges. silk and real plants are always a safe bet.
it’s best to use a filter that’s for a tank at least 10gallons larger than the tank you have. I have always used whisper filters and I love them. they get the job done and are quiet.
for decorations just use you hands
any goldfish food, don’t goo for the cheapest but you don’t need the most expensive either. at least once a month give it a treat of fresh fruit or veggies, orange slices are a good choice. just tie a string on a slice and let it float on the top for a few hours.
The black moor is a relatively small breed of goldfish. They can grow to about 4 inches. The minimum tank size for them is 20 gallons although the bigger the better.
You can use any kind of filter besides underground filter. I suggest a filter that hangs on the outside so you will have max. space inside the tank. The cheapest and most common filter is the Aquaclear filter. Also get a bubbler and air stone.
Black moors have very delicate eyes and terrible eye sight so the decorations should be smooth (I have a smooth, pink cave in my tank) with no sharp points whatsoever. If you want to get plants, I suggest you get real or silk ones as plastic plants can harm their eyes as well.
Black moors will eat regular goldfish food. If you’re going to feed them floating food, you should pre-soak it so that it won’t expand in their stomachs (swim bladder disease). The best quality food is Pro-Gold or Hikari goldfish food although they are quite expensive. You should also feed your fish veges (peas & lettuce are goldfish favourites). Make sure to steam your vegetables before hand. Goldfish also love freeze-dried food like brine shimp.
Cycle your tank before adding any fish! Do 20% water change every week!
I have 2 black moor goldfish and they have a lot of personality and are very pretty to look at. Good luck!

They’re pretty much the same as keeping any other fancy goldfish.
Tank size and Filter:
Like all fancy goldies, they need AT LEAST 30 gallons for the 2 of them, and a filter designed for tanks 1.5 – twice the size of the tank you keep them in.
Decorations
Silk plants, elodea, moss balls, Java fern and plant pots are good ideas, but you can have pretty much anything that doesn’t have sharp edges. Background and gravel/sand.
Food
Blood worm, daphnia, flake/pellets, peas (helps in the event of constipation) tubifex . . . anything that specifically states it’s for coldwater fish.
Miscellaneous:
They’ll grow to around 8-10″ (excluding the tails) and, like all fancies, can be prone to buoyancy problems. Be sure to feed a varied diet to minimize the risk of buoyancy problems being food-related, and fast the fish (don’t feed it at all) one day per week. Don’t worry if they lose their colour and go gold – the black colour pigment of their skin is unstable. Soak any flakes that you feed them. This helps them sink and stops the fish having to gulp in air at the surface – ANOTHER cause of buoyancy problems.
You don’t state whether you have fish NOW or not? If so (and assuming you have a filter) you can use some of the media in the mature filter to help speed up the cycling process of the new filter.
