How To Stay Organized For 1st Semester Of College?
I’m mainly wondering, do I need a folder/binder & notebook for each class? Or should I stick with loose-leaf paper instead of a whole notebook?
Also, how do you personally keep your papers and things organized at college?
Do you use a backpack?
Do you also carry a laptop bag or do you not take your laptop around with you?
Any tips will be appreciated!

Comments on How To Stay Organized For 1st Semester Of College?
My first semester I got a 5 subject notebook that had a folder in each section. 2 notebooks, actually. I would advise a folder or a binder, whichever you are more comfortable with. Whichever way it is easier for you to stay more organized with is what you should do. Keep several folders and label everything. Its the only way you will ever stay organized. I used a backpack to keep my books in and folders in, but its a personal preference. When going to one class, I only took the stuff for that class. If your going to the library and study for several classes, then take all of your stuff. Your first day of class, your professor will tell you whether he wants laptops in class. Some professors will prefer you do not bring your laptop. I merely kept my laptop in my backpack for the classes I took it too, plus my charger for the computer. Just try to stay as organized as possible because its the only way you will stay stress free. Ohh. And I find it more convenient to type my notes after class because its easier to study and you get it in your head twice. If you try to type them 3 days later and cant read something, you wont be able to remember what the professor said versus if you do it the same day, its still fresh in your mind. Go to the library and study. Its easier. My email is brandiadd2001@yahoo.com if you have any more questions.
I separate classes by notebook (for note taking) and if need be, I’ll use a three ring binder to keep track of handouts, worksheets, etc. Since not all professors give lots of handouts (i.e. computer information classes, etc.).
I tried the loose-leaf paper thing, and it did not work me. My notes would be unorganized and it was not easy to quickly find the right page when I was studying or needed to refer to it during class.
I carry a backpack and keep my pens, pencils, calculator, planner and spare loose leaf paper in it.
Laptop, I did not take it to class unless the professor specifically requested that bring them to do some sort of computer related lecture. I found that carrying it was: A) a hassle to carry around; B) a very important item that could be accidentally left behind in a class or simply damaged between classes. Maybe if it was a small netbook, then would I consider taking it.
Don’t stress about how you will organize yourself. I suggest buying a few folders and notebooks and see which works best for you. For me, I use notebooks for the classes I take a lot of notes in (math, sociology), but loose leaf paper for the classes that have printouts of the slides (science). It really depends on your personal preference.
I take time every week to make sure my stuff is organized. I often just shove papers into my backpack as I’m leaving class, so I need to make sure that everything ends up in the right place.
I do use a backpack, since I try not to go back to my room in the middle of the day.
I have a laptop bag for when I take my laptop to the library or a study group, but I don’t take it to class with me. I am worried it would get damaged while I was transporting it.
I strongly suggest you get a calendar of some sort. Online, on paper, it doesn’t matter. But you need to write down test dates and due dates for projects so they don’t sneak up on you. When you get your syllabus, put everything on your calendar.
I have a folder for every class and use a backpack. I do not carry a laptop around, though some people do..personally I find that I remember things better writing it out by hand so that’s why I don’t.
This semester I have 3 classes on MW and another 3 on TTH. Since books and stuff can get rather heavy and I don’t have the time to switch books out daily, I have have two backpacks.. 1 for MW and 1 for TTH. Not sure if anyone else does that..just helps me out since I’m short on time.
I did not take my laptop around with me and did fine.
I used a binder for each class (which is only really 4 or 5 classes in a given semester). With a backpack, but anything that has enough space to carry what you need will do. Keep in mind that you won’t have all of your classes every day nor will you likely have more than 2 back-to-back.
