I Need Motivation To Keep Going To My Classes And Start Studying More! What Can I Do?

4

I am a college student in my senior year, and I’ve been going full-time all year round for 2 years. I am burnt out, tired, stressed…now that it’s the fall semester, I just lack the motivation to go to classes and I don’t even study. Help!

Keep your eye on the prize! Keep telling yourself that you will be finished soon and just make yourself go to class. I assume that since you are a senior, you should be mostly in your major classes and would know some of the people in your classes. Can you make an effort to get to know some of the people in your classes so it makes going to class more enjoyable? Could you start a study group to motivate you to study more? (even though study groups sometimes socialize more than study but that might be good for you!) Again, keep your eye on the prize. You’ve come this far, don’t give up now. Plus, keep in mind how proud your parents will be of you!!!

Think of the bottom line. When we were in K-12 we kind of went to school because we were forced to, our parents prodding us. When we don’t have that same motivation, it’s a lot harder. But think of this: if you don’t go to class, it’s harder to achieve a good grade, which means it’s more difficult to stay in school, which means it’s harder to get the degree. And let’s face it, the degree is the bottom line.
Instead of picking courses because you “have to”, get hyped about your classes. Next semester, pick classes you WANT to take. My rec? Do an independent study on something you find interesting. Like, I am doing one over the summer about identity on the internet.
And remember it’s normal to lose focus and get stressed. That just means sometimes you need to decompress to someone.
Good luck!

I think that every student hits that wall. You need to get over yours. You know what is at the end and if you need a break talk to your parents and take the winter quarter off. Go back spring quarter rejuvenated and ready to work. Sometimes the break is just what you need to get your priorities straight. I know that I’ve taken classes the way you have for 2 years straight and I ended up taking the fall quarter off. It didn’t hurt me either it just gave me some room to breath. Then I went back at it a few weeks later refreshed and ready for more. Your parents may want you to complete the spring and winter quarters but talk to them about taking at least one off.
