In Great Expectations, What’s The Message Regarding Self-improvement?
Hello. =]
In the book Great Expectations, what is Charles Dickens trying to say about ambition and self-improvement? Don’t worry – you don’t have to write a whole essay (that’s my job =P); just a line or two about others’ thoughts on this. I have a lot of ideas about what to say about ambition and self-improvement as a whole theme in the book, but nothing about what Dickens’ message is – that it’s good? That it’s bad? That it won’t get you anywhere? What’s the message here?
Also, please don’t link to any websites like SparkNotes and say “I hope these help you” – trust me, they won’t. =]
Thanks. =]

For me Pip would be more happy if he enjoyed his efforts and achievements for what they were instead of focusing solely on Estella’s heart. The message is both “do things that are enjoyable to you not others” and also “don’t put all your eggs in one basket”.
