Some people have everything and they are grouchy, miserable, and selfish.
Other people work at fast food restaurants and are always cheerful whenever you see them.
Happiness is a choice to be positive and thankful in whatever state of life you find yourself.
Can you be CONTENT with only food, water, and a place to sleep? It depends on your level of gratitude. If you are thankful to God even for the very air you breathe, you might be someone who could be content with a lot less.

FinalMov @ 5:27 pm #

Not really. Happiness comes from a variety of sources. Having nothing but the very base needs fulfilled is not going to lead to a fulfilling life. Religions that teach having no attatchments at all are a load of crap that lead to people wasting their lives away never really living.
I agree with the other person who said they could possibly be content, but never happy. I equate happiness with adventure and taking chances and working hard towards goals- the peace you feel by having none of that is not comparible.

Yes.
Isn’t it possible to be rich, famous, and have everything in the world and still be sad?
Your state of mind doesn’t have to coincide with what you have in front of you… it’s all about how you *think* you feel. You can stay positive in any situation if you just believe you can.
I don’t have many friends, my family isn’t very nice, and I’ve dealt with other shitty personal things in the past I can’t go into right now. But I’m happy. And that is ALL that matters in the end.
It’s all about how you treat yourself when you’re the only one you have left.

No. you need to have at least one person to communicate with. Humans are essentially social animals; we all need to have some connection to other humans. Even the anti socials have connections; their relatives and family.
If a person has all the essential to live in other words water food and shelter he/she will still go crazy if the person spends too much time in isolation without any form of human contact.

Yes. Life does not make you feel one way or another. You choose how to feel. That’s why I get so annoyed when people say that someone else hurt their feelings or made them sad. We all have power over our own bodies and can choose how we feel. Feelings just depend on the way your brain is programed. If you thought genuinely thought that you didn’t need any material possessions then you wouldn’t be sad if you didn’t have them. To change the way you feel, you need to change the way you think. Once you learn to do that you could be a much happier person.

Yes: by only following Islam/To attain peace. The DOs and DONTs ultimately gives you pleasure. At one of the places in the book of God (al-quran):
041.030
YUSUFALI: In the case of those who say, “Our Lord is Allah”, and, further, stand straight and steadfast, the angels descend on them (from time to time): “Fear ye not!” (they suggest), “Nor grieve! but receive the Glad Tidings of the Garden (of Bliss), the which ye were promised!

With no contact with anyone, probably not. I mean, tribes in Africa go without clothes. They have huts, poor drinking water, and have to hunt for food, and they look very happy. But if they were alone, I doubt the person would be happy, so no.

Brianna. @ 2:17 pm #

These are the first elements required for happiness according to Malows Hierarchy of Needs.
But fulfillment and maximizing of ones fullest potential requires a little more…not material possessions, but love, intimacy and security etc (that is, according to Malsow…)

little birdy @ 5:28 pm #

You can be happy even with only the very basics in life we if you have matured spiritually and in union with God, because joy is directly infused in the soul so that the source of happiness is interior instead of exterior.

Most certainly, Buddhist Monks live in this manner with no possessions and they are very enlightened and peaceful. Things are ‘things’ and when you transcend, the ‘things’ don’t come with you.

aletheaa @ 5:10 am #

Definitely, people are so materialistic. they think they are happy but simply just fooling themselves. if anything you would find true happiness.

Jay-Cub @ 7:24 am #

I have to say no, it is not. The person who is happy though it appears he has nothing but food, water, and a place to sleep is happy because he has something you cannot see.

Sojourne @ 12:06 pm #

YES
I’ve done it many times and it’s wonderful.
I was just thinking about this today. When I keep it simple, i’m much happier.
Ive had money and lots of stuff and also very little. I like having very little.

Barry @ 1:35 pm #

Depends what the food taste like, and where you sleep. and if the water is clean. :D -But, most likely i would kill my self or go insane with no human interaction.

bunny @ 4:50 pm #

sure, usually people who choose to have no responsibilities and depend on others for their needs are happy. It’s those who have gotten there because of problems that they aren’t happy.

sophieb @ 10:00 pm #

my people did it for hundreds of years in this country, we got to work 18 hours a day on top of having all of that stuff. So yes it is possible.

I’ve been happy with less than that before. You will always have your mind, and whatever is going in your mind will determine your happiness.

Father Tucker @ 2:03 am #

It depends on the person,we are all different.
Some people like lots of things.
Some like nothing at all.
Some like people
Others like just animals.
The list goes on and on.
For me Yes.

IDontCar @ 5:08 am #

Not for the world’s spoiled over consumers. However, to dump all the material baggage of life is freedom for some.

jaicee @ 7:56 am #

Not for long

Curtis @ 11:14 am #

yes. it seems that every religion has had followers who lived like this for one reason or another.

Jack Notting @ 4:35 pm #

Maybe for a pet mouse. And simple people.
I am too complex for an existence like that.

Rames @ 8:42 pm #

green robot @ 11:06 pm #

Yes, if you are hermaphrodite, this way you lack nothing at all

Mrs.Take @ 6:21 pm #
