Is Organized Religion Responsible For Most Of The Hatred In Today’s World?
I think you could make a case that organized religion is responsible for much of the conflict that has existed among men throughout recorded history.

No, people hide behind their religions to justify their lusts and greed for more lands and conquests.
God, nor religion, has nothing to do with individuals desires of hatred and war. It’s like that ole saying, “the devil made me do it!” No, he didn’t, the person did it because he wanted to do it.
~~
You’ve got the wrong reason. Religion is a pawn for the real reason, power. When Ceaser went out and conquered for the Roman empire it wasn’t to expand roman religious beliefs, but power. Alexander the Great didn’t go out conquering for religion, but power. Khan, Hitler, the British Empire didn’t go out conquering for religion, but power. Most wars can be traced to power in humankind’s history. One group has power and another wants it.
Yes.
I think the only cause of all the hatred and conflict in this age or any age for that matter is man’s ignorance and intolerance. If we all were of the same religion, same politics, same race we’d probably be fighting over the colour of our socks. Hey we fight over football, basketball teams – fans get killed at sports events for heaven’s sake. The problem is within mankind.
no, it is ignorance-
you just made my point.
Also politics. and media
Yes it is.
The answer to your question is No.
The Romans are responsible for the hatred of the world, especially racism. They were the 1st major world power who treated racially-similar groups they conquered differently than others. When they conquered Spain and the rest of Italy, they gave them rights that were far superior to any other areas they conquered. Have you every heard of “Latin Rights”?
The Europeans followed that same vain as the next world power.
Prior to these groups, previous world powers treated everyone the same, regardless.
Curiously, the two worst wars in world history had nothing to do with religion (WWI and WWII). Indeed, Germany under Hitler banned religion. The USSR forbid religion as well. Pol Pot did away with religion as well, as did Soviet China.
Considering those events, organized religion seems to be a non-factor for hatred.
A better question might be if organized religion is responsible for most of the world’s charity and missions of goodwill. The answer to such a question would then be yes (it is amazing how few completely atheistic charities there are).
No.
You can make a case, but it will not take into consideration many facts.
Hatred is just part of humanity. We should think how can we best reign it, not find something or someone to blame.
For your statement as a possibility, then it must have an opposite one to validate it. The opposite would be ” Is disorganized religion responsible for most of the hatred in today’s world?” That leaves us with Yes, No, or some other reason. Is hatred present without organized religion? Yep!, You betcha boots! By association , air has always been present along with hatred, must be a connection here?, Right! This could end up getting pretty tiresome, I suggest the answer for people disliking one another is fairly simple, human nature?
Without question—let’s abolish it!
You could make that case. But that does not mean that religion per se is bad. It means that the way some people interpret religious teachings is wrong.
In the aftermath of major disasters, religious groups are usually in the forefront of aid and assistance to the victims.
Those who were truly religious and believed in the equality of man were in the forefront of the abolition of slavery. Quakers began prison reform in Britain. The earliest hospitals and schools in the Western world were run by religious orders.
Even without disputes over religion, mankind disagrees over many things – equality of the sexes, racial equality, different economic and/or political systems.
To be fair, I’d say ignorance and intolerance is the root of those wars, really.
Edit: I’m reminded of an episode of South Park, involving a war between different Atheist groups.. Heh, I don’t usually learn things from South Park, btw.
idiots doing things in the name of any religion is stupid. It’s not the religion that has them doing it, it is these idiots using the religion as justification in their own minds. And it goes across all religions!
No, religion is not responsible. People are responsible. Some use religion as a justification to do whatever they feel like. Some use it as an excuse. Some use it as a shield. Some use it as a crutch. Some use it as a weapon. Some people deny the existence of any God or higher power, which is by itself another religion.
One of the problems with ANY organized religion is the belief that it and it alone is the “right” and “correct” religion, and all others must be subjugated to it. Followers of other religions must be converted, or suffer the (usually very unpleasant)consequesnces. Do you know how many wars have been started because of differences in religious beliefs? Hint: there is one going on now.
No matter what you believe, or what you don’t believe, you and you alone are responsible for your actions toward others.
End of line.
atheism cures religious warfare is a bumpersticker i saw once. they have a point even sunnis and shiites fight over differing versions of islam
I honestly think that religion is the BASIS of all hatred. To me…religion is just organized, nationalized cults. They make you believe in something soooo bad that you would be willing to do anything for it…
I have no religion, I am spiritual. I believe that you are born and then you die…if you go somewhere else, then ok…if you don’t…then that’s fine too…but people who are willing to kill and hate other people to show their religion is the best….then they just deserve to not be here. Just kill ‘em all…seriously…that would solve soooo much animosity.
