The first thing you need to do is complete the manuscript. No agent or publisher will waste time on an incomplete manuscript.
After you finish writing it, spend a good amount of time editing it. Make sure it’s error free–no spelling errors, punctuation or grammar problems. In other words, bullet proof your work. The first sign of an amateur is a writer submitting a work that’s a mess.
Once you have all of the above done, you’re ready to begin looking for an agent or a publisher. Use research books in the public library like the Literary Market Place. Or use on-line sites like Preditors & Editors and writerswall.com. Both sites have listings of both agents and publishers.
If you decide to go the self-publishing route, then lulu.com is a free service for writers.
Best of luck to you in the endeavor! :o )
