its a common problem at your age, and lot of people suffer from that(specially college guys)…so, that’s not an issue…just have self-pitty….things change with time automatically
i ld suggest you, not to be hard on urself…u must have an objective or goal, which should have the highest priority in ur life, and u are at right age for that….lack of a goal, or low self-esteem(not being happy with yourself and hence not confident) may be the cause the problem u have…and also chose a personality that suits you the best and be like that…and always remember every change is resisted first…
I understand from what you say that you feel that you have been selfish and that is stopping you from relating to others.
If this is correct and you feel this way then your problem might be that you are self centred and defencive, you might have difficulties accepting criticism and this will isolate you eventually.
I have felt like that too in the past and I became unable to forgive people for the hurt they caused me.
But then I realised that I was not perfect my self and that the only way to get by life is to simply trying to get on with each other, this is not easy because we all have our own opinions and if you are a sensitive person then you will feel hurt from those who criticise you.
For me what really helped was Counselling and also reading the Gospels, as I am a Christian.
But it is also a part of growing up I guess.
We all need to find our true selves and that is different from who we learnt to be through our parents and friends.

try to force yourself to think positive
about time you’ll see that you’ll do so automatically and you won’t think about yourself most of the time
I’ve read a book some time ago and it changed my point of view in lots of directions. It’s from Rhonda Byrne and called “the secret”. Maybe it’ll help you maybe not but you could try eading it if you want to.
