Confidence

I am a 31 year old guy that is not ugly or goofy(in fact, my closest friends think that I’m pretty cool), but I am shy when it comes to introductions. I have a natural tendancy to approach every aspect of my life with the desire to do my best, but I trained myself to remain humble…no matter how good I become. I sink down into myself whenever I get a compliment.
When I was in my early teenage years, I was picked on by the pretty people (you know, the popular ones whose parents were obsessed with how well their kids turned out). These kids were the ones that always got their asses kissed. Anyway, I made an oath to never be like those whom I despised, and now I’m stuck.

So here I am…All these years later… trapped by my conditioning.
I know that it takes baby steps to start the path of improvement, and I am looking for the right stimuli.

When you feel that you can do something, this mean that you have self-confidence. Now does that mean that you have a high self-esteem too. What is the difference, and what are the similarities?

I’m interested in practical advice or tips on increasing self confidence and self esteem in particular with guys. My friends and even strangers often tell me that I’m very pretty and smart but when I like a guy, I often don’t have the confidence to believe in myself and end up losing him for what is interpreted as lack of interest. How can I believe in myself more? I am capable and have good friends, the problem seems to start when I like a guy. I’ve had some good relationships but recently seem to have been disappointed in a couple of guys I dated.

I was homeschooled growing up,and my work was never sent in, so I don’t have a diploma. I need to go and get my GED, and then start college, but I’m too scared to even try for my GED. People tell me I’m smart but I dont feel it. I feel like if I go for my ged i’ll fail miserably, or that college will be too hard for me. Right now I have no job, no future, no anything.
But even knowing that isnt enough to get me to go and take the test. I dont want to be a loser my entire life but thats exactly where i’m headed. How do i get the motivation and the courage I need? Right now I feel helpless, and useless, and worthless. I dont want to feel like this forever, but I really think that if i went to take the test for my ged, I’d fail, and that i’d probably flunk out of college or something. I also have severe social anxiety so the thought of being around a lot of other people every day scares me to death. Please help….I dont know what to do anymore.

I know of a few writting exercises for example: piece of paper.Draw a life down the middle. One side you write the things you say yourself that are negative. Like, I have a crooked chin for example. Then on the other side of the paper, you write something positive. In the end, the column with positive self talk will always be greater. Any other exercises you know or can share to boost self confidence and self esteem??
