I’ve seen psychology texts refer to “high (or low) self-regard,” and I’m wondering if this is just an alternative way of referring to self-esteem.

For example, to put an end to government corruption. It’s something that nearly every American wants, yet the government still gets away with it. If all of these Americans that wanted the corruption to end got together and did something about it, I think it would scare the government back into being ruled by the people, as it should be. The problem is the lack of organization. How do we get organized?

Example: I’m overweight, and because of this, I don’t even try flirting with or wasting my time on guys who are preppy because common sense has shown me what they like. However, when I tried explaining this to my friend she doesn’t seem to get it and keeps insisting I have low-self esteem, but I disagree.
So what is the difference between being negative (or having low-self esteem) and being practical?
