I assumed i understood your question somewhat but after I read your additional info confused me – looks like there are two different things you’re talking about.
Good and bad, positive and negative, and a lot of other binary things like this have some basic rules (like you do something that makes someone else happy, it is good. you do something that hurts someone, that is bad) and also driven by perceptions and defintions.
Now, about this positive and negative attritude – it is highly perception based in my opinion (compared to good vs bad). and I am not sure what you’re exactly talking about – an example would have been better.
let’s generalize it with two examples – these aren’t perfect examples – but let’s go with the flow.
let’s say you have an argument with a friend – you continue to be nice, polite, want to think that the other person has the right perspective just like you do, bla bla and approach it that way, i guess that’s a positive attitude. a negative attitude might be getting caught up in anger/frustration and fighting.
let’s life is pretty bad for you. a positive attitude would be keeping high hopes, believe in your confidence, whatever, right. And similarly, negative attitude might be, just losing hope, take a break from whatever it is, say life sucks, and figure out what next.
i know my examples aren’t coming out nice – but i guess I am coveying myself well enough.
yes, positive attitude can be good. and negative attitude also works in many cases – it depends on your definition of negative attitude – if when, a friend who’s meaningless arguing, being upfront, getting frustrated that he is stupid is a negative attitude (i think it would be considered negative attitude), hey, it works in that case sometimes. i could have also kept a nice calm, patient posture for hours, it might not have worked better there.
a negative attitude with long term implications can (or i would say always) is bad. short term, with consequences known clearly, sure, why not? it works.
that said, the added detail, confused me because looks like you’re talking about yin and yan or stuff like that – you hit the bottom, it is good because now you see that you can go up. you are sad, that’s ok, because now you see life is beautiful and stuff. if that’s what you meant, i don’t have enough thoughts to talk about it – i guess i don’t buy much of the ups and downs theories in life. you don’t have to be sad sometimes to know when you’re happy some other times – that’s just my philosophy.
