How do I get rid of my shyness and improve my self-esteem?

Ever since I started middle school, my self-esteem has been at an all time low. I am always self conscious about the way I look, and I am always afraid of what people think of me. This has caused me to be really shy and awkward. It is hard for me to make conversations with people I don’t really know, and it is also hard for me to make friends. I really want to be outgoing, but I feel like my shyness is holding me back. How can I improve my self-esteem and become more outgoing?

How Do I Get Over A Childhood Of Low Self-esteem And Shyness?

I’m 18, and for as long as I can remember I have had low self-esteem and been pretty shy. I’ve gotten better in the past couple of years, but I still feel I have a long ways to go. I feel that I’ve had a pretty unhappy childhood because of this and other things that have happened in my life. Has anyone else been through this and do you have any suggestions for me?
