We Seem To Naturally Overlook Our Own Shortcomings. Are We Thus ‘programmed’ Not To Work For Self-improvement?

9

I am not sure if there is an innate tendency to overlook or dismiss our shortcomings. If there were, I don’t think we, as a society, would have advanced to the level that we have. However, presupposing that there is an evolved predilection (since I don’t believe in Intelligent Design) towards ignoring our shortcomings; couldn’t that actually works towards our advantage?
Now at first this may seem odd to say that an instinctive desire to cast aside our shortcomings works towards our benefit, but you must also consider the flip side of being preoccupied with personal shortcomings. Many times fear and depression are the result of being focused too much on our shortcomings, which ultimately will have a stultifying effect on personal progress. Hence, there is a good evolutionary strength behind being sometimes oblivious to our shortcomings so that we can overcome the immediate task at hand.

I agree with you that people tend to overlook their own shortcomings. Whenever it involves themselves, they care less. They don’t even bother to be conscience as to how people might be affected or not. So long a they have pursued their own interest, so be it. This may be attributed for lack of self-improvement indeed. Most everyone have the habit of taking thing for granted at their own expense. I see that only a few have the disposition to improve themselves. Indeed this is not a common natural character of individuals.
Thanks for asking. Have a great day!

I don’t think I overlook my shortcomings that much. I guess most of my insight about what I need to work on comes from social interaction, though.
I think it’s just a lot easier to observe another person, rather than ourselves. We observe others externally, while we observe ourselves internally. This is clearer in some ways (we know our own motivations, while we can only guess at others’), but muddies the view in certain aspects. I think indirectly observing ourselves externally through our friends/coworkers or possibly by video footage of oneself can help get a fuller view.

Not really, there are so many things we do or feel naturally: we want to win the competition, we are some times cruel when we judge ourselves, we can be jealous, and so many other natural behaviors that will make us try to improve.
And we some times overlook our shortcomings because we don’t want to admit we were incapable, so we can still have hope for the next competition

Normally, the hardware is reasonably good, but the software should be very carefully chosen – in terms of whats ‘best’ available to run in it.
Again, the software can only process on what you ask it to.
Any hoo…if you have money hidden in any swiss-type bank, your dear ones[after your death-remember 'insurance' and convenient solicitations] can kiss it goodbye, that’s software for you, outsourced. Is that a short coming?

It is hard to see the whole picture while you feature in it and that’s why we should step back from a contentious situation and re-evaluate. There is no right or wrong, just the best way forward. If we approach any situation with the right/wrong mentality, things often get out of hand and ill feelings linger. Concentrating on a solution allows comfortable change without judgment (who is right/wrong).

We tend to over look are self because we see are self as being right and doing what’s good. That’s why we do somany things with out thinking, but once we look back and review what we did then we see the shortcomeings. Also, because we think we are so ‘Right’ in the thing we do, that any one who does something that does not help us we catch it a lot sooner
