What Are Some Good Questions To Ask When Interviewing A Professional In Your Chosen Field?
As part of one of my classes, I have to interview someone already working in my chosen profession (psychology). The goal is to learn about what the work is really like and to help me choose courses and set goals wisely.
The only question I’ve committed to is “If I were to apply to work here today, what would you want to see on my résumé?”
Any other good ideas/suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

The key to getting insight from an interview is to ask questions that require thought and not simply “yes or no” answers. Here are some good ones:
How does the reality of your career differ from your original vision of your profession?
How does your career choice support the lifestyle that you desire?
How does it impede your lifestyle? i.e. long hours, vacation time, family time, financial freedom, etc.
If you were back in college, knowing what you know now, what would you have done differently and what career would you choose to be in? Why?
What is the greatest challenge you face as a professional?
Describe what your work day is like. How did you prepare for your career? Was there anything that you now wish that you had done to prepare, that you would suggest that I do? Would you make the same choices today, either in choosing your career or in how you prepared for it?
One I always enjoy asking is to have them describe a conflict they had at work and how they went about resolving it.
How many hours do you work in an average week? What would you recommend as a minor? What is the average salary a new graduate can expect to make? Would you recommend getting another degree (ie, master’s or doctorate)?
I hope this helps a little! Good luck!
