What Are Some Key Reasons Organized Religion Has Hindered Society?

9

I am doing a cause and effect essay in my english class and my topic is “ways organized religion hinders society.” I am mainly looking at things in politics and law along with social issues such as gay and lesbian rights, etc. It has to be a 4 page essay so any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Dark ages.
Inquisition.
Salem witch trials.
World War II.
Israel-Palestine war.
Those are good places to start.

Look at the Taliban for abuse and misuse of a religion.
Morality has always been the way one governs their own heart individually and keeps them accountable to God and the law. Freedom “from” God and the law is never granted in the Constitution and the Constitution is made for a society that believes in morality and right and wrong not relativism or situational ethics.
Gay and lesbians getting more rights then others is actually a breaking down of the morality structure more then an advancement. It tears at the church, the family, the marriage, even the individual freedom. Which most agree that these institutions are beneficial to societal order and norms and cohesion making a society stronger.

For starters you should define terms.
For instance, what exactly qualifies as progress? How do you know it? Is this just your personal judgment, or is there some overarching authoritative standard of progress that allows you to judge things like “organized religion” which may be in violation of the standard? Without this, your paper is no more than an editorial reflecting your own personal prejudices. But I suppose that is okay in an “English paper”… just not much good in settling any important question on the subject.

War, murder, rape, discrimination, racism, and above all greed for wealth and power, and this goes for all religions of the world so why would any one want to be a part of a organisation that commits these kinds of atrocities, so as a catholic I do not support any form of religion today I simply have a personal relationship with God and that’s as far as it goes. may God have mercy on those that support such atrocities that religion has and continues to commit.

Religion tries to void intelligent thinking. Religous ideas deny the truth in order to keep you believing in their ideas. People spend so much time worrying about religion when they could be contributing to society. Religous people think that life on Earth is just a less important prologue to the eternal afterlife. If people would just wake up and realize that life on Earth is whats most important then maybe we would get somewhere. Religions control people using fear. and being under cotrol is not true freedom is it? Most Americans think they are truely free, but this isn’t true if you are bound down by the false hopes offered by religion.

How about the fact that religion is the number one cause of wars and death in the history of Man?

Catholicism has outlawed birth control in many African countries which increases the spread of AIDS and the population grows where children cannot support them. Also in some cultures women are not in a position to say no to sex.
Response;
I mean the Vatican and Catholicism has had so much influence that they basically pushed these laws into gov’t

Hermit, The Church doesn’t have the authority to outlaw anything; that’s a governmental duty.
Well, The Church has given us the Scientific Method…Irish Monks kept Western Civilization alive during the Dark Ages…The Church has been the greatest Patron of the Arts, including inventing Musical Notation and giving us some of the greatest masterpieces ever…our hospitals, orphanages, and soup kitchens make us THE largest charitable organization on Earth…
Take your pick.

Write about how all the freedoms you have now are because of christians dying for the land they loved.
