Self esteem is important to give you the confidence to face a class. It is also important to allow you to evaluate the criticism you will get from your tutors. If your self esteem is low you will tend to react defensively while a good self esteem allows you to consider the criticism and improve your work. It is important not to equate self esteem with arrogance, however. Arrogance may paradoxically be a sign of a fragile self-esteem.

Self-esteem–Ok. There’s a lot that can be said about this. But it boils down to 2 things–if you don’t feel confident, your lessons won’t be clear and the students won’t learn what they need to. Plus, children pick up on stuff like that. If they know you’re not confident, they’ll use that to their advantage and walk all over you.
Reality and challenges as a student teacher–
Reality–They’re going to put you with a really good teacher who doesn’t have bad days, so you won’t get to see how to work with those out of control classrooms you’ll inevitably have. You will have unrealistic expectations about how your first year of teaching is going to be, and it will make it that much more difficult. 10% of all teachers quit in the first 5 years.
Challenges–Behavior, children not doing what you tell them because you’re not a “real teacher,” and the unrealistic expectations I mentioned above.
But teaching is rewarding. I love being a teacher.

students will always put you down either behind your back or too your face and you will need a lot of confidence to stand up in front of your class everyday. Kids can always tell when someone is not feeling their best and WILL take advantage of that.
