1) Keep an open mind
2) Don’t let them laugh at you, but laugh WITH them.
3) Every gray cloud has a silver lining. Just look at the silver lining, no matter how thin it is.
4) Never compare yourself to someone you are likely to envy. Instead, think about there are billions out there who are much less fortunate than you in so many more ways than one. Count your blessings.
5) Three ways to deal with people who’ll get you down. Either:
I) Always stay away from them if you know they’re out to make your day horrible
II) Try to see what their problem is, then have a go at helping them. If you succeed, it’s a great feeling.
III) Ignore them
6) Know whose opinion to care about. There are people out there who are bound to say things against you for no reason at all. Listen to people who you know are truthful and trustworthy enough to determine for yourself who you are being
That’s it for me, I think. Hope I didn’t sound too imperative or bossy with any of that.

I think you hit upon some important things in your question. Indeed we do struggle to be positive, happy people! Let’s contemplate that realization for a moment. Why is it a struggle? The “being/staying positive” part of your question is quite illuminating. Being is an encompassing experience, inclusive of things positive, negative, and neutral. When we define our being as happiness, we’ve suddenly limited ourselves in the world, and others too. What an unnatural state of being–being happiness. If we stay in happiness, we don’t get to experience the full range of emotions, don’t get to benefit from their informative perspectives. And so, I think your request is spot on–it really does require some “trick” to be and stay positive ;) Some illusion is needed to make that state of being perpetually possible!
I believe happiness comes and goes. I think we can influence the probability of its coming and going, but that you didn’t ask!

I do, and I always tell myself to be happy and cheerful everyday!
My trick to staying positive? I would say, be happy and contented with what you have! For instance, there are some who think that wealth brings happiness. Well, that may be true, but then I was not born with a silver spoon in my mouth, and so like most of us, I simply do not always have the opportunity to own what I desire. In fact, I am currently studying with the help of the education loan from the government, and when I graduate (in about two year’s time), I will have to settle the loan by myself. There is still good news, though, if I get to graduate with a First Class Honours, the loan will be converted to scholarship, so I am now giving my very best in my studies!
My advice, do not ever let any setbacks, be it trivial or not, deter you from advancing further in your life. Good luck, be happy and cheers always! =]

I ask myself a simple question. Do I like who I am and where I’m at? If the answer is yes, then I accept that any negative has helped me reach who and where I am… so it has worked to my favor. If the answer is no, then I make a plan to start moving to where I need to be. I’ve been doing this for about 6 years now… and though I still get frustrated and stressed sometimes… I can’t actually recall the last time I wasn’t happy with who I am or where I’m headed. That makes it pretty easy to stay positive.

I have two rules I have made habits, and they have both helped me enormously
the first is to always give myself extra time to do anything that normally takes only a few minutes or so
it takes me 8 minutes to drive to work, if I hit all the green lights, but I give myself a half an hour, and I have had to use it a few times due to traffic problems, and last minute alternate routes, snowstorms, car problems, flat tire, etc etc etc
I am never late to work, and that starts my work day off right every time, I never feel like I am catching up with myself anymore
the second is to always do the hard stuff first, and right away, and learn to do it as fast as you can while doing it the best you can, then do the less important stuff, and with the time left over you can ‘goof off’ guilt free, and it will actually feel like a reward instead of just goofing off
(the technical term is ‘delayed gratification’)

Don’t think, just be.
It’s hard – the secret to doing it right is to meditate regularly. Otherwise I find it’s almost impossible not to think, and, by extension, be unhappy at the very least some of the time.

Being happy isn’t a daily struggle for me at all. All I have to do is wake up, smell the ocean breeze and life is wonderful. I enjoy the simple pleasures that life brings.

No really, think about it @ 9:05 pm #

Looking forward to something, anything. If you look hard enough, there’s always something to look forward to whether its immediate or long term.
