What Would Someone Be Called Who Is Opposed To Organized Religion But Is Not Atheist?

28

If someone is against organized religion and the propaganda, requirements, conditions and stipulations of those participating in recruitment, but is also not opposed to the idea that there is someone/something that all religions worship, what would that person be called? Not an atheist, but anti-religion?
Oh, and please don’t force your personal religion as a way to answer or judge me, because I’m simply curious. Thank you.

You might wish to investigate Deism, Pantheism and Panentheism. each of these fits the criteria you’ve set but there are differences between them. Personally I’m agnostic but do not find any of the logical problems with the above three views that I do find with Judaism, Chistianity and Islam.

A theist who’s not into organized religion.
Question: Have you known any religion besides Christianity? Most don’t have what’s on the list you don’t like. I’m not suggesting in any way that you join any organized religion. Just that if you’re basing your dislike on one plus what you suspect of others, you probably don’t know important things about other ones. I say this only to address possible predjudice when you meet people, & again, not to suggest you should be joining anything.
For instance did you know Judaism doesn’t have a hell concept & non-Jews are assumed welcome in the world to come, there’s not prostelyizing & they couldn’t care less if you are or aren’t Jewish & particpation is self-choice driven in several major movements?
Or that Buddhism is more a philosophy of life than a religion. And you can choose your beliefs or lack of?
Or Hinduism is so diverse there’s practically no way to describe all the possiblities people follow.
Someday I’ll have to ask this as a question, because I always wonder if people are looking mostly at one religion when they come to this conclusion (& usually only a segment of it). For the people I know in real life that is true.

Religious Does Not = Christian! @ 9:33 am #

I’d say spiritual. I have a friend who goes by the term agnostic, but he believes there is something out there, and he can simply never have the capacity to define it. He’s just not arrogant to believe that he can.
It’s also a deist point of view. While deism is a religion, it’s not organized so it qualifies as simply a belief system, not an actual religion.
If you want to keep in touch with your spiritual side, you may consider visiting a Unitarian Universalist church. They are composed of many people who have many different ideas about theology. They come together because they don’t like standard organized religion, but want to have friendships and companionship with other like-minded individuals. They make no claims to know anything other than that all humans are equal and have dignity and goodness. There are even atheists in those churches.
Good luck wherever you go!
EDIT: To those who say “liberal Christian,” get this through your thick skulls: CHRISTIANITY DOES NOT OWN THE WORD GOD! Not being sure if a deity exists does not mean being unsure YOUR god exits!

Spiritualist. it means ur not sure, but ur still searching. Agnosticism is similar, but sort of implies you’ve stopped searching.
“not opposed to the idea that there is someone/something that all religions worship” … reminds me of Universalism, which means that basically the different religions of the world are all ‘worshiping’ the same thing, but just don’t realize it.
just keep searching and asking questions, and u’ll find what you’re looking for. “ask and you shall receive”, u don’t have to be a Christian to see that one.

Not all atheists are anti-religion or anti-belief. Some are live-and-let-live, I think maybe even most. Just as with Christians, a small vocal minority colors the rest.
If you are ‘not opposed to the idea that there is someone/something that all religions worship’, that’s not exactly the same as a solid belief in God. So you’d be agnostic, meaning that you admit you don’t know.

Michael @ 11:11 pm #

You’re not agnostic. Agnostics feel that we aren’t able to tell if there is or isn’t a god. They respect the fact that we may or may not know. It has nothing to do with their feeling toward organized religion.
For all you people who assumed agnosticism, actually look up the term.

Spiritual. That’s what I am. I’m not an atheist, but I despise religion. However, I still believe in souls, spirits, ghosts, demons, and an afterlife. Someone who is in-tune with such things is spiritually aware.

imagine peace ? @ 9:07 am #

Spiritual/Anti-religion.
I’m not 100% sure though.
I myself am anti religion but also an atheist.
I know someone that is against organized religion, but still believes.
I’ll have to ask what she considers herself.

Heavy Metal Jesus @ 3:41 pm #

So you do not follow religions, but believe in a god?
I would call you a Deist, but I’m sure there are better denominations out there.

Trish JPA and Jewish Pastafarian @ 6:23 pm #

I’d have to go with “deist.” That’s someone who doesn’t adhere to a religion, but still believes there’s something out there.

Misnomer @ 10:54 pm #

Do you openly believe there is a God?
If so, then you are a non-denominational theist.
Possibly a deist.

Anonymous @ 11:57 pm #
