Because they are meant to open your mind to alternative ways of living and thinking, that you may not have considered before! I really enjoyed the Celestine Prophecy, it made me really think about daily events and how I responded and grew from each.
i am not the type of person to read self-improvement books, i think they’re ridiculous really, but some people (such as those obsessed with vanity) do NEED them, or some sort of help…
i think theyre so popular because people are so dissatisfied with themselves and believe that reading these books can help them feel better about themselves.
When people are unhappy with certain attributes of themselves, they seek ways and methods of improving them. And when you don’t want to depend on others, reading is a good way of finding out more.
Once I’ve read this book “Being Happy” by Andrew Matthews. The book, like the title suggests is about how one can be happy. As one would discover whilereading the contents, we already have the knowledge that’s stated in the books. But I guess reading the book is a good way to remind yourself on the various ways to improve yourself and keep them in mind.
People read them for all sorts of reason. A lot of people do not want to open themselves up to talking to a counsellor, so they look to these types of books to try and gain an understanding of themselves. I think that it is comforting for people to find a book which reflects the problems or issues they have to deal with. It makes them realize they are not alone and the good ones offer sound, practical advice. A relative of mine recently went through a difficult loss and found a number of these types of books quite helpful. For anyone who is struggling with the difficult things that life has brought them, the book “When Bad Things Happen to Good People” is excellent.
