Why Is Organized Religion A Threat To Humanity?

17

In a question I posted about 10 minutes ago a bunch of people said organized religion is a threat to humanity and prohibits intellectual growth or something like that, but how is it? If I want to go to church how does that affect my intelligence? Can anyone explain to me why organized religion is bad? Also please don’t drone to me about the horrible things that some extremists did years ago

It isn’t. Only those who live their lives in fear and paranoia feel that way.

Yeah, what Hugo said!
And as for religion giving people hope, yes it does. But it is a false hope. Instead of finding a solution to a problem – a war, a plague or disease, a moral dilemma, family troubles – religious people expect God to take care of it all. Perfectly sensible answers may exist, but are rejected by religions because they go against the faith.
Solution to war? Try not thinking you are the only right people on the planet and treating everyone equally. Plague or disease? Take medical precautions and/or treatments. Moral issues? Just put yourself in the other person’s shoes and use your own intelligence to see how your actions may affect the other party, or parties. Family? Again, talk to them.
God is no help. Actually, the hope you refer to, that false hope, is another reason religion is a threat to humanity.

The Religious read the bible/quran and base the rest of their lives on the contents of those old, ancient stacks of fables. They live by their old rules, they DON’T live by the ones they don’t want to abide by, (like rules involving goats and donkeys – of which many modern Westerners have no room for in their homes).
They memorize pages from the bible or quran and show off to others by quoting them by rote as thought they are superior just because they have a good memory.
Organized religion controls its masses with an iron fist of fear of making a mistake. They use punishment as a tool to keep everyone in line. Imagine how free one would be if they threw off the chains of religion and joined those who think for themselves.
Big decision. Life altering.

Because the second a religion becomes organized, a leader comes to lead, and corruption follows soon after. Once you’ve got the leader who realizes he’s got power, then he’ll use that power for things the religion goes against. He’ll put things in the religion that shouldnt be there at all, he’ll say things that are against the real religion and he’ll take advantage of his followers. Which ends up putting people in a box where they dont really think for themselves.
The core of any religion has a good message, but the religion’s leaders add too much bulk which ends up ruining whatever the religion was doing in the first place.

because religion makes people blind from the obvious… which is very obsolete… humans are more than that… we are the ones who manipulate, we are not the one being manipulated… plus religion makes people irrational in a max level… and religion is very corruptive… once u get people to believe what u believe, u can manipulate their perception of reality on a whim since they believe what u believe… it makes people unconfident about their own decisions… religion makes people exert no effort to discover the truth in an obvious and logical way… u can actually have ethics without religion

Do the people why decry “organized religion” support the disorganized kind? What do they object to, organization or religion or both? What they don’t yet understand is that man is by nature religious and social. He forms groups and he forms belief systems. Try and find a contrary example in human history.
Yours in Christ, Nick

“Also please don’t drone to me about the horrible things that some extremists did years ago”
So the fact that organized religion created antisemitism and fueled it for 2000 years is of no consequence to you?
The fact that organized religion supported land-theft, rape, pillage, slavery and cultural genocide of millions of people is no warning in your mind?
The fact that homosexuals are still killed because of 2000 years of being branded (as were the Jews) by Christianity and Islam is of no consequence to you?
The fact that in the 21st century we still have tales of girls being killed by rocks, having their genitals cut, autistic children being killed in ‘exorcisms’ etc is of no consequence to you?
Your intellectual dishonesty is shocking.
Islam and Christianity are organized religions. Between them they are the major sources of war, terrorism, sectarian violence, anti-education attitudes, homophobia, brainwashing, sexism, apocalyptic superstitious fearmongering and agitation on this planet

relationship with Jesus Christ is the only source of hope, peace and life eternal.
religion does it own thing, they try to get to Heaven by works and tradition. it enslaves not sets people free. Jesus said “that I have come to give life and life in abundance” He also said “I am the Way the Truth and the Life, no one goes to the Father except through me”
go to a Bible teaching, Spirit filled church, then learn to know Jesus.

I don’t think it’s a total threat, I mean religion is what eventually unified the Earth like nothing else. I think that we as a species will eventually grow out of the need for it, change is inevitable.

Most wars in history have been fought over religion.
Most religions require you to check your IQ at the door.
Religion does not encourage critical thought.
You do not have to be religious to be a spiritual person or to believe in God.

Sooku @ 10:01 am #

Religion is fine when kept to yourself, but when it’s preached and followed to a T, things get bad. Almost every single conflict throughout history has had religious ties, even today in Iraq. (Christians vs. Muslims)

Carlton Banks @ 12:40 pm #

It splits the human race. Organized religions always try to convert others, sometimes sparking violence.
I do agree with you about the giving people hope and peace of mind, but it isn’t worth all of the bigotry.

Green Beret 05 @ 1:49 pm #

Well lets see here:
Because of religion:
-black people were enslaved
-Thousands of wars
-Crusades
-People killed for not having same religion
-Ghandi killed
-KKK formed
Must I go on?
The true question is how isnt it?

Desiree @ 2:02 pm #

It perpetuates lies and hypocrisy! People deny reality to maintain an illusion.

Shark112 @ 3:59 pm #

Because it isn’t. Only those whoa aren’t based around the God of Scripture.

Clear now?
edit: Faith was still the basis of the attack, and the only reasons *all* Abrahamics aren’t killing those with different beliefs is because they *don’t* follow their texts. See Deuteronomy 17:2-5.

History seems to show a consistent pattern, in different eras and with different religions. Organised religion means some sort of authority structure, and it also means a substantial budget to sustain what becomes virtually a state. Property has to be bought and maintained. Salaries have to be paid. There is hierarchy and rank. With all of that comes material advancement and prestige for the functionaries, priests, teachers, and so on. It’s very hard for this to happen without some kind of accommodation between the organised religion and the nation or state which hosts it. There are tax breaks, the state and the religion validate one another and support one another’s propaganda. There are rivalries with neighbouring nations and religions. Sooner or later that leads to tensions, jealousies and anger. This is a fertile breeding ground for ambitious politicians and power-brokers. Before long, either within the religion’s own numbers (a sort of civil war) or between different religions, or between different states supported by religious authorities, you get violence. Human beings are ready enough to be violent with each other at the best of times, and organised religion, of pretty much every sort, seems to be very good at turning potential into reality.
Within that context, looking at the US, for instance, organised religion gives stressed people peace of mind about things that sometimes they didn’t ought to have peace of mind about; like it being ok to own guns, invade other countries, or hate moslems, just, you know, for instance.
So that’s how it can be, and often is, bad. Please remember, I’m talking primarily about the ‘organised’ bit.
